
Interpack 2026 opened on May 7 at the Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre - and for anyone still wondering whether digital inkjet printing has truly arrived in packaging, this show provided a definitive answer.
Held every three years, interpack is the packaging industry's most significant global trade event. This edition centered on three themes: digital inkjet printing, late-stage personalization, and sustainable packaging. Together, they mapped out a clear direction of travel for the industry - away from large-scale standardized production and toward digital, flexible, and low-carbon manufacturing.
According to Messe Düsseldorf, 2,804 exhibitors from 65 countries participated, with professional visitors attending from 161 countries. Seventy-five percent of visitors came from outside Germany, and 28% from outside Europe entirely. A notable addition this year was a dedicated parallel exhibition for component suppliers, spanning two halls and featuring around 100 specialist companies. The format reflects a growing priority among packaging equipment manufacturers: localized supply chains, modular system design, and faster response capability.
Across corrugated cartons, folding cartons, flexible packaging, and labels, digital inkjet solutions are making real inroads into market share that has long belonged to flexographic and gravure printing.
Several leading equipment manufacturers demonstrated high-speed single-pass inkjet systems designed specifically for short runs, fast job changeovers, and versioned packaging. Print quality has closed much of the gap with conventional analog processes, while color consistency and variable data handling remain areas where inkjet holds a clear advantage.
Industry analysts at the show pointed to two structural drivers behind the double-digit annual growth inkjet has posted in the packaging segment over the past three years: the continued expansion of e-commerce logistics, and the shift among consumer goods brands toward smaller, more frequent production runs that conventional printing processes are not well suited to handle.
From personalized food and beverage labels and limited-edition packaging runs to pharmaceutical serialization and luxury goods authentication, the combination of variable data printing and smart packaging is creating measurable commercial value.
Several ink suppliers used the show to present specialty security ink solutions supporting invisible marking, UV-reactive development, and blockchain verification interfaces. On the equipment side, manufacturers demonstrated integrated vision inspection and cloud-based data management systems - a shift that moves the conversation from print execution alone to closed-loop data management across the production process.
The implication is straightforward: competitive differentiation in packaging print is moving away from press speed and toward integrated data and print service capability.
Sustainable packaging was the third major thread running through interpack 2026, and it was treated as a business requirement rather than a headline.
Driven by the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation and broader carbon neutrality commitments, sustainability innovation was visible across the entire supply chain - waterborne inkjet inks, compostable substrates, low-energy curing systems, and zero-waste ink circulation technology. Inkjet printing has a structural advantage in this context: no plate-making, on-demand ink delivery, and significantly lower chemical solvent consumption compared to conventional processes.
Multiple exhibitors noted that demand from brand owners for carbon footprint transparency in packaging has accelerated sharply since the start of 2026, and is actively driving procurement decisions away from high-energy legacy printing processes.
The visitor profile from outside Europe - nearly 30% of total attendance - is worth noting. Packaging manufacturers and brand owners from Asia, North America, the Middle East, and Africa made the trip to Düsseldorf in significant numbers, reflecting a synchronized global appetite for technology upgrades in packaging production.
Delegations from China, India, and Southeast Asia focused their attention on corrugated digital printing solutions suited to domestic e-commerce and logistics requirements. North American visitors showed strong interest in food-safe ink systems and pharmaceutical packaging compliance platforms.
Interpack 2026 did not introduce inkjet printing to the packaging industry. What it confirmed is that inkjet's position in packaging is no longer a trend to watch - it's a structural shift already underway, driven by consumer demand fragmentation, supply chain flexibility requirements, and tightening environmental regulation.
The packaging that wins commercially over the next decade will need to be smarter, more personalized, and demonstrably more sustainable. Inkjet printing sits at the intersection of all three.
