Current Printhead Landscape In Chinese UV Printers

The UV printing industry in China has developed rapidly over the past decade. Today, most components of a Chinese UV printer-including the machine frame, control boards, software, and ink systems-can be sourced domestically. However, industrial piezoelectric printheads remain an important exception.

Imported printheads from Japan and the UK continue to be widely used in Chinese UV printing equipment, particularly in industrial and high-performance applications. At the same time, Chinese printhead manufacturers are continuing to develop their own piezoelectric technologies, although domestic printheads are still at an early stage of commercial adoption.

For UV printer manufacturers and buyers, printhead selection has become an important factor affecting print quality, productivity, reliability, maintenance, and overall equipment cost.

1. Ricoh: A Popular Choice for Industrial UV Printers

Ricoh industrial printheads are widely used in Chinese UV printing equipment, particularly in flatbed and hybrid printers.

The Ricoh G5 and G5S are known for their durable construction, variable droplet technology, and ability to handle demanding UV printing applications. Imported printheads currently remain the mainstream choice for many industrial UV printers manufactured in China. Ricoh, Konica Minolta, Epson, Kyocera, and Xaar each serve different market segments based on factors such as print quality, productivity, durability, machine size, and cost.

Meanwhile, Chinese printhead manufacturers are continuing to improve their piezoelectric inkjet technologies. As domestic printheads develop in areas such as grayscale performance, droplet control, jetting stability, and durability, they may gradually become more competitive in cost-sensitive UV printing applications.

For printer manufacturers, domestic printheads could provide greater flexibility in machine design and supply-chain management while helping reduce equipment costs.

However, the key challenge is not simply producing a lower-cost printhead. Long-term commercial adoption also depends on print quality, consistency, printhead lifetime, ink compatibility, control-system integration, and reliable technical support.

How to Choose the Right UV Printhead

There is no single printhead that is best for every UV printer.

For industrial flatbed and hybrid printers, factors such as durability, high-clearance capability, droplet control, and long-term stability may be more important.

For high-volume production and One-Pass systems, firing frequency, ink circulation, reliability, and production stability become critical.

For compact UV printers, print quality, machine cost, ink-channel configuration, and application flexibility may be the main priorities.

Therefore, printhead selection should always be considered together with the machine structure, ink system, control board, curing system, target materials, and intended production volume.

Looking Ahead

The Chinese UV printing equipment market is moving toward greater localization, but industrial printhead technology remains an important area where international suppliers continue to play a major role.

Over the next 3–5 years, the development of Chinese piezoelectric printheads could become an important factor in the evolution of UV printing equipment. At the same time, established international printhead manufacturers are likely to continue improving print quality, productivity, reliability, and ink compatibility.

Ultimately, the future of UV printing will not depend on printhead origin alone. The real competitive advantage will come from how effectively the printhead works together with the entire printing system to deliver stable quality, high productivity, and reliable long-term operation.
